People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)-India has called for the removal of a ”controversial” billboard at Irinjalakuda near Thrissur depicting a squirrel chopped into pieces.
The billboard, put up by ‘Symbiosis- Creating Creators, depicts a squirrel cut into pieces with the body parts being depicted as pieces of fruit. The tagline of the advertisement says– ‘Be fruitful’.
PETA’s Campaign Co-ordinator, Ashish Verma said in a statement here today that the depiction in the billboard violated the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and urged the Advertising Standards Council to remove it.
The squirrels are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act and killing it is a punishable offence. The display of such billboards would encourage viewers to kill squirrels, the statement said.
”It is esential to remove the controversial commercial and take urgent steps to avoid further display of such advertisments,”
