Animal welfare board of India asked the Tamil Nadu government to seize the camels that were illegally brought to state without any valid transport permission. The AWBI said that “All the camels that were brought to Tamil Nadu are without valid permission and without necessary health certificate as required under the Law of Transportation of Animals.” It was reported that 50-100 camels were brought in to Tamil Nadu and the same number were expected in other states also.

The board considered this as “cruelty” because camels are habituated to live in Rajasthan and is not a resident of peninsular states. Bringing them to the state like Tamil Nadu that is about 2,000 km away from its habitat causes a psychological stress to them, As climatic condition of Tamil Nadu is opposite of that of Rajasthan.

AWBI also suspected that camels were starved and were not given water, food and medicine as required during transportation according to the Animal Transportation rule, 2001. There are no trained butchers and slaughter house available in the peninsular region for the slaughter of camel under Slaughter House Rules.

Cruelty is inflicted on animals at the time of open road slaughter where they were bled to death. AWBI has requested that directions to be given to the divisional commissioners, Municipal Corporation, collectors, DGP and SP of all states to enforce relevant rules against it and therefore follow the same implemented.
