Five years investigation of Indian poultry farm by PETA INDIA investigated that chickens are abused terribly including the live scalding, starvation and mutilation of birds. This terrible condition could lead to health hazards including Ecoli, salmonella and bird flu.
According to PETA INDIA report, the condition of chicken-meat and egg industries is beyond anyone’s worst nightmares. In egg farms, around 6 to 7 chickens were crammed together inside a cage. In order to prevent them from pecking at each other there sensitive beak is scorched off with the hot blade. Some birds starve to death because of unbearable pain while eating. When they stop producing eggs, they are “force-moulted” which means they are kept in the darkness and deprived of food and water for up to 14 days to shock their bodies in to another laying circle.
Chickens that are raised for flesh spend their very short life in a very huge shed along with thousands of other birds. The ammonia fumes from their accumulated waste burn their throat, eyes, breast, hocks and even causes most of the birds to lose their feathers and develop blisters. Chicken grow so large so fast that they frequently suffer from heart attacks, respiratory disease, liver disease and disease resulting in weakened immune systems. Most of the chicken also suffers from crippling of leg deformities because they are not able to carry their own weight.
The only relief from this misery is still more terrifying, that is piercing to death. Many chickens are grabbed by their frail legs and wings this often leads to breakage of their bones. They are hung upside-down in metal shackles and dragged through an electrified water bath. Many escape the electric shocks only to have their throat slit and be dumped in the scalding hot defeathering tanks when they are still conscious. Some other birds are transported to shop where workers violently grab them and transfer them to cages where they manually kill the birds.
PETA INDIA reports also notes that the crowded and filthy condition at farm and in slaughter house has a serious threat to human health as well because it is providing ground for disease to spread like E. coli, salmonella, listeria and the most deadly disease Bird flu which the minister of state agriculture Shri Kanti Lal Bhurai warned may hit India any time.
At last PETA INDIA said if you really want to prevent animals from suffering deadly disease and also to improve your own health then stop eating meat and eggs.
