A proposal envisaging exchange of animals between Lahore zoo and Delhi zoo has drawn indignation of an international animal rights group, which has asked Central Zoo Authority (CZA) not to scrutinize the project.

In a letter to member secretary of CZA, PETA said that mutual transfer of animals raises the issue of breach of their rights and security concerns.

Pakistan government forwarded the proposal of offering a pair each of Llama, Deer and Ostrich to the Delhi Zoo in the exchange of two pairs of Sambar deer for its Lahore Zoo in front of CZA. The proposal is likely to be discussed during CZA’s steering committee meeting. In this meeting only it will be decided whether to allow exchange or not.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) is an autonomous body of the Environment Ministry, entrusted with the mission of ensuring regulation and recognizing the Zoo in the country, in addition managing animal exchange programmes between two parks. The Indian Chapter of PETA, Anuradha Sawhney has complained about poor living condition of the captive animals at Lahore Zoo, which is one of the oldest Zoos in the world.

In Pakistan, two deer’s died while being transferred from a zoo and six tigers had died due to blood parasites. She says that we are more concern about the safety of animals that are proposed to be transferred from India. She also asked whether CZA is confirmed about the safety and adequate facilities provided to animals in Lahore zoo.
