The Animal Welfare Board of India filed a application in the supreme court on seeking permission to ban the traditional “jallikattu” festival that is held in Tamil Nadu every year during the period of pongal celebration.

This is the worst tradition they follow every year as this is unnecessary cruelty to the bulls. The bulls are starved or fed intoxicated substances before being provoked to fight men trained for the purpose. Last year during this festival some person were killed and most of them were injured, apart from cruelty against animals.

By seeing such a terrible cruelty, Supreme Court finally agreed to refuse the bull fight during the pongal this year. By the said orders, the apex court has directed the government to ensure that the age-old fight was held in the presence of observers of the board.
