India has discontinued a 25-year-old tradition by banning the use of elephants on republic day’s military parade in New Delhi because some angry elephants caused a scare at the parade last year.

Animals rights activist have also made protest to bring to an end the hardships faced by these jumbos. The elephant were the highlight of the parade, they has to carry the national bravery award-winner children on top of them. But these children will be taken in open military jeep.

Last year, nearly two elephants became uncontrollable and caused stampede. Keeping this in mind, the government decided not to take any chance in this year at these huge gathering.

Another most important reason to ban this tradition is that from past 4-5 years animal right activists have been demanding for ban, saying that this is cruelty made to elephant making them stand and facing cacophony of band for long hours even during rehearsals.

Therefore, elephant are commonly used in India at various fairs and festivals, particularly in southern India.
